2019: A Clear Ambition
Founded in 2019, Pholoho Biotechnology set out with a clear ambition. Specifically, we aimed to engineer viable biological alternatives. These alternatives needed to outperform the limits of traditional production systems. Accordingly, our first offensive targeted alternative proteins. We developed these under a rigorously sustainable, environmentally accountable framework.
2021: Structuring Our Processes
Soon after, we identified microalgae and algae as a category with exceptional potential. Indeed, this potential remained largely underexploited. Rich in bioactive compounds, these organisms unlocked high-value applications. Specifically, they opened doors across aquaculture, hatchery live-feed, and livestock nutrition markets. By 2021, consequently, we had structured our operations around advanced extraction, purification, and stabilization processes. As a result, we delivered standardized, reliable biomolecules. These were engineered for commercial-grade reproducibility.
2022: A Technological Milestone
Then, in 2022, we reached a decisive milestone. Specifically, we deployed pilot-scale bioreactors and photobioreactors. This infrastructure, in turn, gave us full command over quality and reproducibility. It also gave us control over compound concentration. Ultimately, it integrated our entire value chain — from cultivation through extraction, formulation, and stabilization of bioactive molecules.
Sharpening Our Strategy
These advances, moreover, cemented our scientific positioning. Specifically, they sharpened our strategy toward targeted, high-precision ingredients. These ingredients carry tightly controlled biochemical profiles. Since then, our portfolio has expanded significantly. It now covers rotifer and Artemia enrichment, larval survival, and early-stage development. It also covers immune support and feed conversion optimization. These are high-margin categories, indeed, where science-backed performance drives real commercial value.
Today: A Fully Integrated Platform
Today, Pholoho Biotechnology operates as a fully integrated microalgae biotechnology platform. This means combining a proprietary strain bank with high-yield cultivation units. It also means a dedicated purification laboratory and in-house formulation expertise. Additionally, we work in close partnership with researchers, hatchery operators, and industry partners. Together, we deliver both scientific rigor and proven extract efficacy.
Looking Ahead: Seaweed R&D
Building on this foundation, we are now extending our research into seaweed. Specifically, our R&D program is currently developing rockweed-derived fucoidan and kelp-derived laminaran. These programs remain in active development, not yet commercial, and represent the next platform we’re building alongside our established microalgae portfolio.
Our Guiding Principle
In response to escalating aquaculture productivity demands, furthermore, we hold firm. Sustainability imperatives guide us as well. Pholoho holds to one non-negotiable principle: rigorous scientific control, measurable quality, and responsible, scalable production.
A Global Vision
This vision, ultimately, now powers a trademark active in more than 40 countries. It backs a portfolio of microalgae-derived feed and nutrition products, with seaweed-derived ingredients advancing through our R&D pipeline. These products are engineered to maximize hatchery yields and livestock performance. They also drive operational ROI for our industry partners worldwide.
